a new sadness known | Go Back

Working in the media exposes you to a lot of weird and depressing things.

I remember a a little while back, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina… working double shifts to cover site updates for cleveland.com’s sister site nola.com… during those shifts most of the work was shifting through raw AP photo feeds and determining what photos were OK to put online for them (nola) vs. those too graphic or tasteless to display for public consumption. I can’t really remember how many dead bodies I looked at over a few weeks but I can say I probably won’t forget them.

At this point you might be asking where the heck are you going with this… well even looking at the aftermath of such a tragic event as Katrina didn’t or hasn’t effect me as much as me now being a dad and reading what seems to be at least a story a day of someone killing or hurting their children.

How depressing it is to read today about a woman to looks at a police officer and then simply walks into a raging river with her 6 year old and toddler. Three drowned victims. Or what about the man who places a newborn in a microwave and cooks the child.
